What is Biological Age?

Biological age (also called physiological age or body age) is an estimate of how old your body functions compared to the average person at your chronological age. While your chronological age simply counts the years since birth, your biological age reflects how lifestyle, genetics, and environment have shaped your body's aging process. Unlike chronological age — which is fixed and counts birthdays — biological age can change. It can go up or down depending on your habits. A 50-year-old who exercises daily, eats well, and manages stress might have the biological age of a 40-year-old, while a sedentary 30-year-old with poor diet could show a biological age closer to 45.

How is Biological Age Calculated?

Scientists measure biological age through several validated methods. Our calculator uses lifestyle-based estimation (Modes 1 & 2) and the Levine Phenotypic Age formula for blood biomarkers (Mode 3).

Scientific Methods to Measure Biological Age

Epigenetic Clocks (DNA Methylation)

The most accurate method measures methylation patterns on your DNA. The Horvath Clock (2013) can predict age within 3.6 years across most tissues. PhenoAge (2018) and GrimAge (2019) are more recent, incorporating clinical biomarkers for improved mortality prediction. These require blood or tissue samples.

Blood Biomarker Analysis (Levine Phenotypic Age)

Morgan Levine's Phenotypic Age formula (2018) uses 9 routine blood biomarkers plus chronological age to estimate mortality risk and phenotypic age. These biomarkers — albumin, creatinine, glucose, CRP, lymphocyte percentage, MCV, RDW, alkaline phosphatase, and WBC count — are available from standard blood panels. This is the method used in our Blood Test mode.

Telomere Length

Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with age. Shorter telomeres correlate with aging and age-related diseases. However, telomere length is highly variable between individuals and tissues, making it less reliable for individual age estimation compared to epigenetic clocks.

Lifestyle Questionnaire

This method estimates biological age by analyzing known aging accelerators and protectors in your lifestyle: exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, smoking, alcohol, and biometrics like BMI and waist circumference. While less precise than lab methods, it's accessible, free, and provides actionable insights for immediate lifestyle improvements. This is the method used in our Lifestyle Quiz and Quick Estimate modes.

What Your Biological Age Result Means

Your biological age result tells you how your body is aging relative to your chronological age.

If your biological age is <strong>lower</strong> than your chronological age, your healthy habits are protecting you against accelerated aging.
If your biological age is <strong>higher</strong>, lifestyle risk factors may be aging your body faster than time alone. The good news: biological age is dynamic and can improve with positive changes.

Chronological age is the number of years since birth — it's fixed and cannot be changed. Biological age reflects how well your body systems are functioning relative to a typical person your age.
